Exploring Animal Systematics in Pari Island: Biology Students of FST UIN Jakarta Conduct Field Practicum on Faunal Diversity and Modern Taxonomy
Biology students from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta conducted an Animal Systematics practicum on Pari Island, a small island managed by the Jakarta Provincial Government in the South Thousand Islands District. This field-based laboratory activity aims to deepen students' understanding of animal classification principles by examining morphological, anatomical, and phylogenetic traits directly in nature.
Students learned to classify animals from phylum to species level, identify structural features such as symmetry and appendages, and use microscopes and dichotomous keys for identification. Activities included observing arthropods, mollusks, and vertebrates, as well as creating entomological herbaria. This practicum not only sharpened students’ taxonomic skills but also introduced them to real-world biodiversity, laying a strong foundation for further studies in biology and conservation science.
