On July 4, 2024, the Theater on the 2nd Floor of the Faculty of Science and Technology at the State Islamic University (UIN) Jakarta witnessed a Studium General focusing on the crucial role of computation, particularly Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI), in current research in the field of chemistry. Guided by Prof. Dr. Jalifah Latif from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, the event was attended by numerous academics, researchers, and students from various universities across Indonesia.
During her presentation, Prof. Jalifah Latif highlighted the revolution brought by computational technology in modern chemical research. She demonstrated how Machine Learning and AI enable rapid and accurate data analysis, expedite drug design processes, and identify new materials with unique properties. Her emphasis extended beyond speed and efficiency to explore new possibilities in understanding the fundamentals of complex chemical reactions.
The Q&A session following the presentation delved deeper into the challenges and opportunities of adopting this technology. Participants actively questioned the ethical and social implications of employing advanced technology in chemical research. The Studium General not only provided profound insights for attendees but also served as a pivotal moment to foster interdisciplinary collaboration between computation and chemistry, motivating young researchers to continue innovating in this field.
